Joint Stock Company “Latvia’s State Forests” (Latvijas valsts meži – LVM) was formed in October 1999, to be put in charge of the management of state-owned forests in Latvia.

Latvia is among the European countries richest in woodland: forests occupy 3.6 mln ha, or 56% of the total area of the country. The LVM administrates about a half of the total area of Latvia’s forests. The LVM manages state-owned forest land with the total area of 1.95 mln ha. The main product of the company is timber. Beside forest management, the LVM is also engaged in other activities. One of those is the production of selectively bred seeds and seedlings. The LVM produces both seedlings for reforestation and decorative seedlings. The quality management system (certificate) for producing and selling seedlings for forest regeneration is proof to the fact that the planting stock by the “Seeds and Plants” (Sēklas un stādi) unit of the Latvia’s State Forests has been produced and sold in accordance with traceability and quality control requirements.

From its nine tree nurseries, the company can annually launch onto the market more than 40 mln seedlings of forest trees: pine, spruce, birch, oak, black alder, and fast growing aspen. The number of exported seedlings is growing steadily from year to year, and currently amounts to 5 mln per year.  Regular investments into production promote rapid growth: the company sales target for 2014 is 46 mln seedlings, but for 2015 and 2016 – already as many as 50 mln. The offer of decorative planting stock exceeds 600 different varieties.
